John 3 tells of a Jewish leader coming to Jesus in the covering of the night. Baffled Nicodemus has the education and qualification behind his name to be considered an expert. Yet he humbly seeks Jesus, sure that this man of miracles has a more authentic power than him.

Jesus responds, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God... That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:3, 6) Wise Nicodemus stammered through this conversation with valid questions, "How can a man be born when he is old?" (John 3:4)

One commentator spoke to this conversation with words I felt deeply. Our family still contends with incomprehensible complications over identity, citizenship and documentation.

The scholar said, "If a nation passed a law that said no one could live there except those who were born in that nation, and someone wanted to live there who was not born there... It wouldn't matter if he took a name that was common in that nation, spoke the language, dressed like that nation, observed the customs... It wouldn't matter if his parents or his children were born in that nation, or how many friends he had there. All that would matter was if he was actually born there."

Isn't it astounding that we can be born again into His Spirit? There are no qualifications, no documents to certify. We become citizens of heaven when we place our faith in Jesus. (See Romans 10:9) We are born into heaven while we still live on earth. The only paperwork is in heaven, our names written into the Book of Life. (Philippians 3:20, 4:3)
