The terrific thing about clean pants

Last week, I wrote a short, silly blog about hunting rainbows. We were up to our ears in laundry because the rain had been relentless. In that blog, I celebrated the end of the drought, Benjamin’s love for mud puddles, and mentioned that we don’t have a tumble dryer.

GUESS WHAT!?! After reading that post, a very dear friend sent a message and said she wanted to buy us a dryer! She said she felt like she was supposed to spend the extra money she had saved on a dryer for us!!!  I spent a solid 24 hours being overwhelmed and awkward - as she became more giddy and told me to make sure I got a good one for the family and included the price of delivery and installation. Heh.

A tumble dryer.  Can you believe it!?! Here’s what’s so terrific about this - besides the obvious fact that WE ARE GONNA HAVE CLEAN CLOTHES! And unlimited puddles for Benjamin! And Lifa will have his first experience of feeling a bath towel fresh out of the dryer. Oh boy, oh boy.  But, besides that, here’s what’s so terrific - Buying someone a tumble dryer is not very glamorous. My friend is not going to show up at work and say she saved an African child’s life or a brought relief during a national disaster. She probably won’t tell anybody she bought a very blessed family in Cape Town a tumble dryer. But she said she “felt” like that’s what she was supposed to do.

That means she hears God, and she obeys Him. It means she’ll spend what she has on things God cares about and things people aren’t going to be talking about. It means God talks about dryers. And people listen. It means we have a good, good Father who cares about our dirty laundry - both literally and figuratively. He is the kind of God who is willing to die for your sins and move money around the world to make sure you can have a clean pair of pants. Isn’t that just terrific?
