πIt's the Friday Call to Worship!π
I've been reading through the table-turning, parable-telling Gospels and am sure I would have doubted Jesus as Messiah if I lived in His day. He wasn't the revolutionary warrior-Messiah people expected. He didn't come from high influence, and He never seemed to be in a hurry, no matter how hard-pressed things were.
Jesus let His disciples spend a panicked night in a storm before coming out on the water. He left Lazarus dead for four days before calling him out of the grave. He endured a painful night in a garden awaiting His betrayer.
Finally, Jesus let the very people He came to redeem do everything they could to crush Him. Disappointed people scorned Jesus. "... if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!" (Matt 27:40)
Why would He stay up there if He could have commanded angels to come and save Him? (Matt 26:53) We've all wondered that. "If You can heal, why haven't You done it yet?" "If You can make all things new... If You can reconcile... If You can... Why haven't You?"
Peter explains it best, "The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent." 2 Peter 3:9
The simple and simultaneously wildly complicated answer is: HE IS. No one saw the Son of Man's bigger picture while He hung on that cross. No matter what humanity flailed at Jesus, He was immovably committed to the better thing. The highest thing. Whether we understand in the moment or not. He's not slow. He still hears and sees you. Keep going.
