You look like what you look at.
Last week TWO different people told me Benjamin and Lifa look alike... Spoiler alert: They are not biologically related. This is technically impossible.
Yet, somehow, they kinda do. Benjamin’s all-time favorite person is Lifa. Chris and I got trumped by big brother a long time ago. The moment Benjamin sees his brother, he erupts into shrieks, squeals and laughter. It’s the best!
People used to tell me that Lifa and I have the same smile. It sounded ridiculous until I began to understand that Lifa learned how to smile from me. So he smiled like me. Genetics matter, but it’s what we look at that might hold the most weight in what we look like.
Benjamin is learning how to smile and make the expressions of his big brother because that’s who he wants to look at the most. He doesn’t have to share a gene pool with Lifa to look like him. He just has to look at him.
We all have physical DNA that gives us our unique starting places. Soon after that, we begin to choose what and who we’re going to look at. That’s where we decide who we’re going to be and, ultimately, what we’re going to look like. Moses came down from a meeting with God, and his face shone like Light Himself. Two brothers with no biology between them share the Ladd family smile everywhere they go.
Face time matters. It matters where you turn your face, who you’re looking at, and what you look like. And the good news is it’s easy to change your DNA. You can look like Who you look at. Just start looking that way today.
